Midwest youth register for NUMATS 2016-2017

Midwest youth register for NUMATS 2016-2017

Parent and Educators: Do you have or know a Minnesota student in grades 3-9 whose grade-level MAP or NAEP scores show high ability, or who qualifies for gifted services at school? What are the true indicators of that student’s learning needs if measuring by grade-level proficiency alone? How can you appropriately support children’s growth without providing instruction or enrichment at a level matching their abilities?

CTDNorthwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS) through the Center for Talent Development is a research-validated program that utilizes above-grade-level assessment to help parents and educators better understand their students’ educational needs.

Eligible NUMATS students from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and other Midwest states meet grade-level assessment criteria in either verbal/reading or math on a nationally normed or state achievement test. Students who qualify for their school’s gifted programs are encouraged to register. Scores from tests taken in previous years may be used to qualify.

Why participate? How can I register?

NUMATS offers students, parents, and educators a more accurate measure of academic growth. Participating students receive a clearer picture of their true abilities and can qualify for additional opportunities or scholarships. Parents gain access to personalized resources that help you advocate more effectively for your student(s).

Register now for dates in September 2016 through early June 2017; PSAT 8/9™ dates are scheduled only in December and January. Download the NUMATS Family Fact Sheet (.pdf) and direct any program questions to numats@ctd.northwestern.edu. Be sure to locate available Minnesota test center(s) for your preferred date. NUMATS offers need-based financial aid for students who qualify for other federally subsidized programs. Special accommodations may be made for students with a disability that requires special testing tools or an exception to standard testing procedures.

NUMATS allows eligible students to take internationally recognized tests before the grade levels at which they are normally administered. The PSAT 8/9™ test, designed for students in grades 8 and 9, is administered to students in grades 3 through 6. SAT® and ACT®, designed for students in grades 11 and 12, are administered to students in grades 6 through 9. NUMATS identifies academic ability, measures growth and connects students to resources and opportunities for advanced students. – Center for Talent Development

What’s New about NUMATS this year?

The PSAT 8/9™ replaces ACT’s Explore test for NUMATS students in grades 3-6, a new direction that reflects ACT’s decision to discontinue the Explore exam (typically administered in grade 8) across the country.
